About
Amusement Park Ranker tracks 50 parks across 17 countries and scores each one on the same four criteria, so a mega-resort and a regional favorite can be compared on equal terms.
Two of the four criteria — thrill factor and family friendliness — are editorial ratings, not formulas. Together they carry 66% of the total weight. That is a deliberate choice, not a gap in the model: no specification sheet can capture pacing, airtime, theming, or the feel of a park, and pretending otherwise would add false precision.
What is externally sourced. Attendance estimates, published ticket and parking prices, ride counts, wait-time archives, record claims and review scores all come from public or operator sources. Value for money and crowd management are built directly from those numbers.
What is editorially assigned. The thrill and family ratings are set by judgement. They are informed by ride specifications, show schedules, accessibility provision and guest experience, but they are not derived from any single dataset. The ratings are calibrated relative to the other parks in the index, and the scoring maths re-normalises them against the current set on every run.
How the editorial ratings are reached. Each park is assessed against a documented rubric: the breadth and quality of its lineup, the standing of its signature attractions within the wider industry, how well it serves its target age groups, and consistency of guest experience. Ratings are cross-checked with on-the-ground reports, public reviews and record databases, then positioned within the existing index so the spread matches the editorial consensus. The result is a calibrated judgement, not a counted score.
What this means for the index. This is a curated set of 55 parks, not an open leaderboard. A new park cannot be dropped in without recalibrating the whole set, because its thrill and family ratings would have to be judged against the existing parks and the re-normalisation would shift everyone else. That is why additions are rare and deliberate, and why the index is best read as an annually refreshed editorial ranking rather than a live, all-comers chart.
Every serious ranking has judgement in it. Ours is disclosed above the fold.
Scores are compiled from public review platforms, published attendance figures, operator ride databases and posted wait-time archives. Nothing is pay-to-place: parks cannot buy a position in the index.
How we measure waits. A park's average wait is the unweighted mean of the 2025 season average posted queue time across every tracked attraction in the park — an all-ride annual mean, not a headline-ride average. Virtual-queue duplicates and retired attractions are excluded, and so is any attraction in its first season, so a new-land opening surge never distorts a park's crowd score. Waits are then judged against what a park of that attendance would be expected to run, so popularity itself is not penalised.
Wait figures come from Queue-Times.com, which publishes per-attraction season averages from live queue tracking. 40 of the 50 parks have usable coverage. The remaining 10 have no public tracker data at all — or a feed that fails our floor test — so their average wait is left blank rather than estimated and they receive the neutral crowd score, the same treatment given to parks missing attendance figures. Those parks are labelled Not measured everywhere a wait figure would otherwise appear; you will never see a number on this site that is not a measurement.
One feed-quality screen applies to every park: if a park's tracker never reports a single attraction averaging under 30 minutes — including its carousels and children's rides — the feed is publishing a nominal minimum rather than a measured queue, and the park is excluded and marked not measured. Lotte World is the only park in the set caught by this screen; its feed floors at exactly 30 minutes across all 37 attractions, against a next-lowest minimum of 12 minutes elsewhere in the dataset.
How we measure value. Value is computed from published figures only: the effective cost of a day (mean of the park's published minimum and maximum adult gate price, plus parking shared across a typical car) set against delivered ride units — the smaller of the park's ride count and what a visitor can realistically ride in a typical visit, at roughly three attractions an hour. Those units are then adjusted by a lineup-quality multiplier built only from externally verifiable counts, sourced on one basis for all 50 parks from RCDB park pages and operator ride lists: roller coasters counted by intensity tier, dark rides, marquee manufacturer installations, and recorded park records. The multiplier is bounded to 0.75–1.25, so cost always dominates, and it is calculated per counted attraction with a minimum denominator of eight, so a park with a very small counted lineup regresses toward the average rather than topping the range. An earlier version of this index instead adjusted value by the share of a park's rides flagged as notable; that measured how generously each park's ride list had been curated, not the quality of the lineup, so it has been removed.
Each park's overall score is the weighted average of the four criteria above, rounded to one decimal. Before weighting, each factor is standardised so all four have the same spread across the 50 parks, which keeps the stated weights honest. Where a park lacks reliable public data for a criterion, it is scored conservatively rather than excluded.
Known limitations. This index ranks all-round parks, and it weights rides heavily. Thrill carries 33% of the weight, so any park that deliberately does not compete on rides will place below its general reputation. The specialisation allowance softens that without erasing it. Four park types are affected:
All of these are outstanding at what they set out to do. If you are travelling with under-tens, or for shows, gardens or animals rather than coasters, read the family and value columns rather than the overall rank.
Missing wait-time coverage. Ten parks have no usable public queue-tracker coverage and receive the neutral crowd score of 5.5: Tivoli Gardens, Nagashima Spa Land, Puy du Fou, Dreamworld, Universal Studios Singapore, Ocean Park Hong Kong, Fuji-Q Highland, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, Warner Bros. Movie World and Lotte World (excluded by the feed-quality screen above). A neutral score neither helps nor hurts, but it does mean 15% of their total is inert — they cannot gain on a factor other parks are genuinely scored on, and a well-run park with short queues gets no credit for it here.
A specialisation allowance is then applied. Not every park is attempting the same thing — a show-driven park is not failing at coasters, and a coaster park is not failing at toddlers — so where a park's thrill and family standings differ substantially, the lower of the two is partially raised. The rule is applied identically in both directions and to all 50 parks.
Thrill scale compression. Thrill ratings are assessed holistically rather than derived from a purely specification-based formula. Because the same height and speed numbers cannot capture pacing, airtime, terrain or overall ride quality, the live scores are deliberately kept in a relatively narrow band (mostly 6.0–9.0). That is an honest reflection of judgement uncertainty, but it also means thrill differentiates less between mid-tier parks than the other three factors do. The model is deliberately conservative here: it will not invent a spread that the data and the criteria cannot defend.
Trip-planning details — opening hours, ticket, pass and queue-skip pricing, transport, accommodation, dining, weather cover, family amenities, payment notes and accessibility — are taken from each park's official website and its published visitor information. Seasonal events and shows are listed only where the park itself announces them, and typical months are indicative: exact dates shift every year.
Records and achievements are drawn from public record-tracking sources such as Guinness World Records and the Roller Coaster Database (RCDB), and we only list claims we could verify; records that have since been beaten are marked as no longer held.
