Disneyland vs Disney World: Which Should You Visit?

Choose Disney World if you want a full holiday and Disneyland if you want a great few days. Disney World in Florida is four theme parks across 25,000 acres and needs five to seven days; Disneyland in California is two parks you can walk between in five minutes and works as a two to three day trip.

On our scoring, Magic Kingdom ranks 6th in the world at 8.43 and Disneyland Park ranks 8th at 8.35 — close enough that the deciding factors are cost, travel time and how long you have.

Which is bigger, Disneyland or Disney World?

Disney World, by a distance that is hard to overstate. The Florida resort covers roughly 25,000 acres — about the size of San Francisco — with four theme parks, two water parks and 25 hotels. Disneyland Resort is about 500 acres total: two parks, a shopping street and three hotels.

That difference is mostly logistics. At Disneyland you park once and walk everywhere. At Disney World, moving between parks means buses, monorails, boats or a car, and 45 minutes each way is normal.

Which has more rides?

Per park, Disneyland wins: 52 rides at Disneyland Park against 37 at Magic Kingdom, on a site 40% smaller. Disneyland is denser, and it holds originals that Florida never got, including Indiana Jones Adventure and Matterhorn Bobsleds.

Across the whole resort, Disney World wins easily — four parks including EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. If you only have two days, Disneyland gives you more per day. If you have a week, Disney World gives you more.

Which is cheaper?

Ticket prices are close: $104-206 a day at Disneyland, $109-199 at Magic Kingdom. Both score poorly on value — 3.5 and 3.8 out of 10 — because the daily cost is the highest in our top 50.

The real difference is the trip around the ticket. Disney World needs more nights, more days of tickets and either on-site hotel rates or a rental car. Disneyland is a shorter trip with cheaper nearby hotels within walking distance. For a fixed budget, Disneyland is usually the cheaper Disney holiday, even though its top ticket tier costs more.

Which is better for families with young children?

Both are outstanding: 9.7 for Magic Kingdom and 9.6 for Disneyland on our family score. Magic Kingdom edges it for a first classic-Disney trip and has far more on-site hotel choice with early park entry. Disneyland is easier with toddlers in practice, because the shorter distances mean fewer meltdowns and you can go back to the hotel for a nap and return.

Which is better for coaster fans?

Neither is a thrill park — 8.2 and 8.0 on thrill. Disneyland Resort has the stronger single lineup between the two gates, with Incredicoaster and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout at Disney California Adventure. Disney World spreads its bigger attractions across four parks: Rise of the Resistance, Expedition Everest, Guardians: Cosmic Rewind.

If thrill is the priority, both lose to a two-hour drive: Universal in Orlando, or Six Flags Magic Mountain from Anaheim.

When is each one quietest?

Disneyland is quietest midweek from mid-January to February, or mid-September — avoid weekends year round, because it draws a local annual-pass crowd Florida does not have. Magic Kingdom is quietest on weekdays from late January to early February, or in September; avoid Christmas week, spring break and July.
